Matt LeBlanc is 'planning to quit Top Gear if co-host Chris Evans does not go first'

Matt LeBlanc is allegedly planning to quit Top Gear if his co-host Chris Evans is not removed from the team first, sources have claimed.

The American presenter, 48, is said to be concerned about Evans’s rudeness towards other members of the team, with some suggesting he also is frustrating to film with.

It allegedly comes just months ahead of the start of filming for the second series, which is due to begin in September.

The rumours also emerged as the show’s bosses face a rapidly declining audience, with just 2.34 million people tuning into last week’s episode. The lowest audience posted by the show's former team, led by Jeremy Clarkson, was 2.36 million in June 2003.

A source told the Sun on Sunday: “The team does not gel and the atmosphere between the presenters is frosty.”

They added: “Matt’s indicated he won’t continue on any further series if Chris remains. He is far from the only one who is not happy.”

The BBC told The Telegraph it would not be commenting on the claims. A spokesman for LeBlanc told the Sun nothing had been “discussed or decided”.

It is not the first time rumours have circulated about the duo’s relationship. The show, which launched again at the end of May following the removal of Clarkson and his team over a "fracas" with a producer, has been hit with a series of allegations.

At the end of last year, Lisa Clark, its executive producer, quit amid claims about Evans’s tyrannical manner, with one source at the time alleging the presenter thought he could “trample over everyone”. The BBC vehemently denied any bullying claims.

The show's team was also accused of disrespecting those who fought in the First World War after LeBlanc was pictured performing “doughnuts” around the Cenotaph in London.

Evans and LeBlanc were later reported to have fallen out over the stunt. Evans denied the row on Twitter.

The Telegraph has contacted representatives for Evans and LeBlanc for further comment but has not yet received a reply

I agree with what Bom Stickle said.

The films and segments are fine- and still beautifully shot. That Vulcan segment was great.

The studio bits are really awkward. Also there's not the chemistry, banter and jokes between the hosts, and I simply don't care about any of the 'minor' presenters. Who even are they? Evans, Jordan and LeBlanc are the only real personalities.

It's obvious the show was about Clarkson Hammond and May rather than cars, and that's what made it work so well.

I like it!

I watched Sunday's episode yesterday and thought it was pretty decent so not too sure why it's getting slated.

It's just a bit awkward when they are back at the studio as they don't really seem to be natural. That and Evans still being too shouty seem to be my only problem with it.

They've covered the basics:

Loudmouth, controversial commenting, edgy cunt in the mould of Clarkson? You get Chris Evans.

Attractive eye-candy for the birds? You get Joey from Friends.

Amusing old fart, whose opinions generally go against the grain of motoring? Here is Eddie Irvine.

I always thought Eddie Irvine was a bit of a soppy cunt when he was involved with F1 as a team owner. The same soppy cunt is good entertainment value, playing the soppy cunt presenter role in Top Gear.

The presenters don't yet gel like the old ones, but they've made a good start.

Re: Top Gear - returns this weekend
When I first got my Android Box my son asked if they had box sets for Top Gear on it, I found them all so we took a peek at the first series with JC et al. After 10 minutes he begged me to turn it off, it was awful.
I'm not saying that Evans will ever manage to make the show like it was in it's heyday but he deserves a chance to put his stamp on it the same way the racist, bigoted, misogynists did......

Re: Top Gear - returns this weekend
It's fine though, isn't it, really. Much the same as it always was, just without the usual presenters. And we get their show too, so meh, nothing to whinge about really.

Re: Top Gear - returns this weekend
I caught one of the new episodes and thought it was ok. A bit awkward and a bit forced, but given time to find its own way it could be really good. Whether Beeb will give it the chance or whether the presenters will hang around long enough I don't know.

Evans is annoyingly obviously, but probably no more so than Clarkson. Joey fits well, and I thought Sabine was good. It really doesn't need three more people though. Stig obviously stays, but they should lose two of the other three.

Re: Top Gear - returns this weekend
I've actually enjoyed the last couple of episodes.
Couldn't watch the Clarkson ones the whole way through, used to record them and just watch the car bits...if there were any, it was all about them!

Nearly bought one of Chris Harris's old car a few months ago, the main reason i didn't was he'd signed the back of it!
